Whats on in Reykjavik in August

The month of August in 2011 starts with a socalled Labor Day Weekend (Verslunarmannahelgi) where Icelanders by the thousands head out of town to camp in the wilds or join in one of the organized events that are held throughout the country.
The following weekend is the Gay pride festival, one of the biggest events in Reykjavik city center in the summertime and has been groving each year from 1999. Well over 70 thousand people gathered in Reykjavik last year and more people are expected to participate this year 2009. The peak of the festival is the Gay Pride Parade that starts at 2 PM on Saturday. Lesbians, bysexuals, gay men, transgender people from Iceland and many foreign countries, friends and families support each other in this happy and proudful event.
The Reykjavik Culture Night (Menningarnótt) is a hugh 24 hours festival that is worth to experience. It starts off with the Reykjavík Marathon early in the morning on the 20th where thousands of people participate, followed by artistic events which are held in the streets of downtown Reykjavik and at cafés throughout the day. It tehn continues into the evening with all kinds of cultural performance and ends with a most impressive display of fireworks down by the main harbour area of Reykjavik.
International Tango Festival in Reykjavik, TANGO on ICE, is on the 25. - 28. August.Tango dance teachers and musicians from around the world are attending this event. Argentine tango is about life and, especially, about the relationship between a man and a woman. Argentine tango has been a passion for dancers for more than 100 years. Dancers love tango for its beauty, mistery, passion and excitement.
